WELCOME FOODBALL CUP

Street food festival in the host cities of the 2018 FIFA World Cup

“A caravan food vans manufactured at the Russian GAZ automobile plant, with a team of chefs, caterers and food producers from different regions of Russia traveled more than 10,000 kilometers and visited six host cities of the 2018 World Cup. Thanks to the chefs, every city treated the football fans with a special menu. In Sochi it was a ‘Black Sea cuisine’, in Kaliningrad — the ‘Baltic menu’, in Rostov-on-Don — the ‘Football’ kurnik chicken pie, and in Nizhny Novgorod — WELCOME mini karavai bread loafs. Kazan offered an incredible selection of Tatar cuisine dishes, and the capital of Mordovia Republic — authentic national dishes, including pacha burgers and pachat pancakes. Here in Samara we invite all chefs, restaurateurs and authors of street food projects to come and see our food vans and to check them in operation”, said Yekaterina Shapovalova, “Gastronomic Map of Russia” federal project coordinator at the opening ceremony of the 7th WELCOME FOODBALL CUP Street Food Festival.

The WELCOME FOODBALL CUP Festival under the “Gastronomic Map of Russia” federal brand was launched on 14 June in Sochi. The food festival travels from one city to another in a caravan of food vans, and has already visited a number of 2018 FIFA World Cup host cities, including Sochi, Rostov-on-Don, Nizhny Novgorod, Kaliningrad, Kazan and Saransk.

“This project is the responsibility of the Federal Agency for Tourism together with the Russian Export Centre and with support of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Foreign Ministry, the Federation of Restaurateurs and Hoteliers, and the National Association of Culinary Experts. The aim of the project is to promote our gastronomic culture and provide information about traditional dishes and opportunities to try them”, said Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova at the briefing in Samara.

Young chefs and well-known restaurateurs presented the real Russian cuisine, the distinctive traditions of the football capitals and their small homeland. They tried to break the stereotype that Russian cuisine is only pancakes, caviar and pies.
